English with Kirsty – episode 44

Expressions with give, take, do and make

Kirsty working with students

You can listen to episode 45 here:

In this episode, I look at verbs that use “give”, “take” “do” and “make”.

Give

This document should give you an idea of what we would like to achieve during the next phase of the project.
I would appreciate it if you could give me some feedback on this proposal.
Can you give me a hand with this project?

Take

I’ve asked another colleague to take the lead on this project because he has more experience in this field.
Sometimes it’s necessary to take a risk.
Who is going to take the minutes during the meeting?
I’d like to take this opportunity to explain what we have been doing since our last meeting.

Do

If we don’t do the research properly, we could lose a lot of money.
These sales figures are not bad, but we need to do better next year.
You have done really well.

Make

We have had countless meetings but we don’t seem to be making much progress.
We have made significant improvements to our processes.
In order to make the most of the time available to us, we have decided to have a working lunch.
You have just made a valuable point.
I am waiting for the project team to make some recommendations.
