Conversation Cafe

  • Do you use English as an additional language and wish that you had more opportunities to practise speaking it?
  • Do you wish that you felt more confident about taking part in spontaneous conversations in English?
  • Do you think that you’ll forget the things that you know because you don’t often get the chance to speak English in your free time?
  • Do you wish that you could be yourself more when you’re speaking English so that people get to know the real you?

I’m a language learner as well as an English teacher (German, Romanian, and European Portuguese are my main additional languages and I’ve had experience learning several others).

I’ve always found actually speaking the other languages more of a challenge. Partly because I’m a perfectionist, partly because I love to talk and there’s so much that I want to say, and partly because I overthink it!

I wanted to create a friendly online cafe where we can come together as an international group and where I can provide a safe space for those who want to practice and develop their English speaking skills.

I have other work-based services, but this one is for general English. We talk about travel, culture, food, what we’ve learned recently, books, personal development, and other general topics that come up. We have regular participants from 3 or more different countries, so it’s a chance to learn about other places too.

How does it work?

Each conversation cafe event is a one-hour meeting on Zoom where you’ll have the opportunity to speak in English, meet new people, and learn new things. Ultimately the sessions will empower you to use English more confidently and share your ideas in a way that sounds like you.

How much does it cost?

Visitors can attend a session for free and then decide whether to attend the cafe regularly. Members pay £7 per session or there are a couple of ways to get free sessions by supporting the conversation cafe:

  1. Invite your friends – every time a new friend attends their first meeting, a free participation will be added to your account.
  2. Offer to do a short presentation for the group (maximum 10 minutes, topic to be agreed, no more than once every six months).

The next meeting

We’re meeting on Wednesday 25th March at 18:00 GMT (19:00 CET).

  • We’ll have a general topic for our discussion each time.
  • You’ll have a chance to share your thoughts and ideas with the other participants, or to listen at first if you feel more comfortable doing that.
  • You’ll be able to learn new words and practise using them.
  • I’ll be there to facilitate the discussion or to help out if you have questions or you want to know how to express an idea.

It’s not a course. We’re not focusing on correcting mistakes. It’s about improving fluency and using the language in real conversations!

What happens at the sessions??

I know from my own experience that t can be daunting coming to an event in an additional language for the first time. Ok, this is true sometimes of events in our first language when we don’t know the other participants. But we’re a friendly and welcoming group and apart from the introductions at the beginning, when everyone says a few words about themselves, you can decide how much you want to participate. I facilitate the conversation to make sure that everyone who wants to has the chance to speak and I ask questions that make it easier for people to get involved. Each time we have a different topic so you’ll learn something new in addition to any new vocabulary that you pick up during the session.

These events are for you if

  • You sometimes feel nervous when you speak with new people in English.
  • You are looking for opportunities to speak English in your free time.
  • You want to meet with other people who have English as an additional language so that you can grow and develop your speaking skills together.
  • You want to feel more confident about taking part in spontaneous conversations.
  • You worry that you might not understand what other people say.
  • You are looking for somewhere where it’s ok, and even encouraged to make language mistakes – because that’s how we learn.

They are not for you if

  • You are looking for an English language course (have a look at my home page for the range of courses that I offer, but this is a conversation meeting).
  • You aren’t willing to listen to others and learn along with them.
