English with Kirsty – episode 291

9/10 Learning through volunteering part 3

You can listen to episode 291 here:

To celebrate 10 years of the English with Kirsty podcast, I’m creating a 10-part series to celebrate 10 different forms that learning can take.

The final part of the series is about learning through Volunteering. I had a number of people who wanted to be involved, so in the end I decided to split this into three conversations. The third and final part is with Colette Myler, whom I met back in 2021 when we were attending some of the same international networking events together.

What did we talk about?

I really wanted to show some of the different ways in which people can be volunteers, so I spoke with people doing very different roles. We talked about:

  • Colette’s story – why she decided to volunteer and which organisations she chose.
  • The skills and knowledge that Colette brings to her volunteering roles and some of the new skills that she’s gained over the years
  • Some of the things that Colette has learned through her volunteering experiences – as well as some of the people whom she’s met along the way.
  • How volunteering and being part of the community are part of the balance we need – and how this balance has more components than just our work and the rest of our life
  • Tips for getting started.

Who is Colette?

With over 30 years in Irish Healthcare, Colette (she/her) is no stranger to diversity. Colette holds certifications in Project Management, EU Procurement, Lean Six Sigma and Erickson Solution Focused Coaching. A local leader in steering Irelands ‘Roadmap for Inclusion’. Colette is also an Access Auditor with a desire to see the world more inclusive and accessible with universal design thinking.

Colette has worked in an adult acute hospital and an acute children’s hospital, and more recently Ireland’s only rehabilitation hospital. Currently Colette works on healthcare procurements.

Two of Colette’s most memorable achievements have been managing the design, build and equipping of an MRI and Gamma diagnostic facility in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, (now Children’s Health Ireland) and the equipping of the new 120 bed facility with integrated therapy, at the National Rehabilitation Hospital.

Colette enjoys travelling and has, over the years, been to many cuntries, enjoying and learning about their diverse cultures, architecture and nature. Colette also enjoys gardening and music.

Believing in a five-point star balance in life, Colette strives to embed in her everyday world the growth of self, soul, family, community, and work.

Today Colette is delighted to have an opportunity to talk about the community aspect of life and has been a volunteer and active participant in a Town and Village Renewal initiative for the past three years.

You can find out more about Colette and connect with her on LinkedIn.
