English with Kirsty – episode 327
Transcreation and adapting content for the German market with Belinda Grace Fischer
Belinda and I have been getting to know each other recently – with coffee chats in German and English to share our thoughts on language, business, …. and dogs 🐾
I asked Belinda to come on the podcast because she often posts interesting takes on marketing and transcreation and I wanted to explore this topic further, looking at various aspects of her work, how we use language differently, depending on the culture and context, and some speecifics relating to the German market.
I hope you enjoy our conversation. Send us any questions or any examples you want to share from your own experience in the comments!
You can listen to episode 326 here:
We talked about:
- Belinda’s language story with German and English
- How our plans can change and grow into something we may not have considered at the beginning of our career.
- How different parts of our personality can come through in each language
- What transcreation is and why it’s important
- Practical examples of how Belinda works with her clients and their content to improve the experience for German readers
- Things that have surprised Belinda’s clients about creating content for the German market and mistakes that we should avoid
- And finally – I had to ask about Belinda’s new dog
And … it wasn’t just dog talk. One of our final take-aways was “enjoy the walk you’re on” – the dog’s version of be in the present moment!
Who is Belinda?
This is how Belinda introduced herself:
“Hi, my name’s Belinda! I’m a localisation specialist – working with English and German – and I mostly transcreate marketing and UX content for tech and travel brands based in the UK and the Nordics.
I love spending my free time with dogs, specifically our newly adopted dog Tony, and exploring new places in the world. My favourite city in Europe (so far) is Porto, and my favourite in the US is Washington, D.C., where some of my relatives are.
An arguably “fun” fact about me is that I’ve called 911 – or the equivalent number – in each of the three countries that have shaped me: Germany, the US, and the UK.”
